The National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (Namcor), along with its partners Rhino Resources, Azule Energy, and Korres Investments, has started drilling a new oil and gas exploration well called Volans-1X. This well is located offshore in the Orange Basin, in petroleum exploration block 85.

The drilling is being done by a rig called Deepsea Mira, which is run by Northern Ocean. The rig is working in water about 1 200 meters deep, and the drilling should take around 55 days to finish.

"As Namibia’s national oil company, our participation in the Volans-1X well underscores our commitment to responsibly advancing the country’s energy sector. With the support of our experienced partners, we continue to strengthen Namibia’s upstream capabilities and explore opportunities that will ultimately contribute to national development, local content, and long-term energy security,” Namcor’s acting MD, Victoria Sibeya said.

Rhino is the operator of the block and holds a 42.5% stake together with Azule Energy while Namcor holds a 10% stake, and Korres Investments the remaining 5%.
