Galp, Total target Mopane expansion
Galp and TotalEnergies are advancing appraisal drilling at Namibia’s Mopane oil discovery, targeting a new area to establish the scale and commercial potential of the offshore resource, Upstream reported on Monday.
The planned Mopane-4X well will target the south-eastern part of the discovery, helping the partners reduce uncertainty about the reservoir as they assess its potential for development.
The appraisal campaign comes as Namibia’s Orange Basin attracts growing interest from international oil companies following a series of offshore discoveries.
TotalEnergies acquired a 40% operated interest in petroleum exploration licence 83 (PEL 83), which contains Mopane, in September. Galp also holds 40%, while the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia and Custos Energy each own 10%.
TotalEnergies has indicated that a final investment decision on Mopane could be targeted in 2028, subject to the outcome of appraisal work and the project’s commercial viability.
