Sintana expands Namibia footprint
Sintana Energy says its portfolio of five offshore petroleum exploration licences in Namibia made significant progress during the six months to 30 June 2026, as TotalEnergies, Chevron and Galp Energia advanced exploration and appraisal programmes across some of the country's most prospective offshore acreage.
The company said the period was marked by TotalEnergies' agreement to farm into petroleum exploration licence (PEL) 83, a 57% increase in the estimated contingent resource at the Mopane discovery to 1.38 billion barrels of oil equivalent, Chevron's commitment to drill PEL 90 before the end of 2026, plans for a second Chevron-operated exploration well on PEL 82 in 2027, and an agreement to acquire an interest in PEL 37.
The company has also strengthened its position in the Walvis Basin by signing a Letter of Intent to secure exclusive rights to acquire a significant interest in PEL 37, which borders PEL 82. The proposed acquisition would expand Sintana's exposure to exploration activity in an area attracting increasing industry attention.
The update reflects the continued evolution of Namibia's offshore petroleum sector, where a series of discoveries in the Orange Basin has drawn sustained investment from some of the world's largest energy companies. While much of the acreage remains at the exploration and appraisal stage, operators are increasingly defining potential development pathways for commercial discoveries.
For Sintana, the strategy remains one of building minority interests alongside established international operators rather than taking on operatorship itself. That approach provides exposure to multiple exploration and appraisal programmes while reducing funding requirements and operational risk.
