Academia hosts annual cross-country

Running with pride, strength and school spirit

Every year, on the first Friday of the first week of school, Academia S.S hosts its annual cross-country event. It is widely regarded as one of the most exciting ways to begin the academic year, with the whole school taking part and learners full of energy.

The event also serves to formally welcome Grade 8 learners. As their first major school activity, it helps them settle in and feel part of the school community from the outset. Instead of remaining in classrooms, learners are encouraged to participate, interact and enjoy the experience.

Learners are placed into teams according to the first letter of their surname. The teams are Sparta (white and blue), Troje (red and black) and Athene (yellow and green).

Each team supports its runners and competes to show the most school spirit. Learners wear their team colours and encourage one another throughout the event.

The race covers a one-kilometre route around the school. While the day is primarily focused on participation and enjoyment, there is also a competitive element, with the first ten finishers earning places in the school athletics team. However, all learners are encouraged to take part and enjoy the run, regardless of finishing position.

Music plays throughout the event, adding to the atmosphere and reducing pressure on participants. At certain points along the route, coloured powder is thrown, leaving learners covered in bright colours by the end of the race. The event is therefore experienced more as a celebration than a formal competition.

Teachers and LRC members are present throughout the event to guide learners along the route and ensure safety. They also provide encouragement and help keep the event organised.

At the end of the race, learners are treated to watermelon, which has become a popular tradition after running in the sun. The occasion provides an opportunity for learners to relax, socialise and reflect on the race.

Cross-country is not only about running. It is about building unity, encouraging team spirit and starting the school year on a positive note. It is energetic, colourful and engaging, making it one of the most popular traditions at Academia S.S.
