Shaping Namibia's economic future
From the classroom to future careers, stronger mathematics skills can open doors for young Namibians.

Nedbank Namibia has contributed N$99 000 to the Namibia Mathematics Institute (NMI) to support mathematics teaching and learning.

The funding will help NMI conduct teacher development workshops and provide practical learning tools aimed at improving mathematics education and, ultimately, giving young people stronger foundations for further study and future careers.

Mathematics plays an important role in science, technology, engineering, finance and innovation. As Namibia works towards a more knowledge-driven and industrialised economy, strengthening these skills among young people is increasingly important.

However, many mathematics teachers still need ongoing training and support to improve their teaching and help learners perform better in the classroom. Weak mathematics results can affect learners' access to tertiary education and, in the longer term, contribute to a shortage of skilled professionals in fields that are important to the country's development.

NMI's teacher development programmes have already shown positive results. During a recent workshop in Keetmanshoop in the //Kharas Region, only four of the 22 participating teachers scored above 50% in a mathematics competency assessment before the training.

After the workshop, 16 teachers scored above 50%, with seven achieving more than 70%.

Similar improvements were recorded during workshops in the Omusati Region, highlighting the potential impact of targeted support for mathematics teachers.

NMI also works directly with learners through practical initiatives such as Map and Money Maths. The activities use real-world situations to teach mathematical concepts, helping learners understand how mathematics applies to everyday life, including managing money and making financial decisions.

Victor Maengahama, chief financial officer at Nedbank Namibia, said education was key to creating opportunities for young people. "At Nedbank Namibia, we believe that education remains one of the most powerful tools for unlocking opportunity and creating sustainable economic growth. Mathematics, in particular, equips young people with the analytical and problem-solving skills needed to succeed in the modern economy," he said.

Through its support for NMI, Nedbank Namibia aims to contribute to developing young people with the skills needed to pursue careers in fields such as engineering, science, education and business.
