Beauty, confidence and culture take centre stage at M&K Gertze
Beauty, cultural pride and self-confidence took centre stage as 10 contestants competed in the annual Miss and Mr M&K Gertze High School competition.
Organised by the school’s teachers’ organising committee, the event brought learners and community members together for an evening celebrating talent, personality, cultural diversity and self-expression.
The competition opened with an energetic group dance before contestants took to the catwalk, showcasing their style and cultural pride in three categories: traditional wear, oldies outfits, and evening gowns and suits.
As the only male contestant, Eusto van Wyk confidently represented the boys, impressing the audience with his stage presence.
Following various rounds, the judges selected five finalists to advance to the question-and-answer segment, where they were challenged to express their views, share their ideas and outline their visions for the school.
Florencia Auchas was crowned Miss M&K Gertze, with Vaniya Diergaardt named first princess and Alexandra de Waal second princess. Van Wyk won the title of Mr M&K Gertze.
Several special awards also recognised the contestants’ individual qualities and achievements. Stephanie van Wyk received the Miss Congeniality award, Merilize Morkel was named Miss Personality, and Zunaya Titus won Miss Photogenic. Diergaardt also received the Public Choice award.
For the contestants, however, the experience went beyond the competition and the crowns.
Stephanie described the experience as nerve-racking but rewarding, highlighting the friendships formed among contestants and the support shown by the community. “It was nerve-racking, but I pushed through, and it was just great. It was beautiful to see that the community can get together and support the young girls and boys who entered the competition. The contestants really bonded with each other, and that’s what I love most,” she said.
She also praised the coaches for helping contestants overcome their fears and grow more comfortable on stage. “Our coaches were so great. They were patient with us, and they made us comfortable walking on stage and being confident about speaking about our opinions and ideas,” she said.
