Ella du Plessis teams make their mark
Ella du Plessis High School competed in three sporting categories – netball, hockey and soccer – during the tournament.
The soccer team played its matches at Trustco Field, winning six of its seven games and drawing one.
The hockey team went one better, maintaining a perfect record by winning all its matches.
The netball team had a more mixed campaign, finishing with three wins and three losses.
Inekela Ambuga was named the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper, an achievement he said was the result of years of hard work and determination.
“The tournament was not easy. It required hard work, talent, determination and self-motivation,” Ambuga said.
“I have worked for three years to get to where I am today, and it is rewarding indeed.”
Despite facing challenges during the tournament, Ambuga said the team stayed focused by following advice from their coach.
“Don’t play to win, but to have fun, and the results will come out positive,” he said, quoting the coach.
Hockey captain Prince-Lee Kasanga said he was proud of the team’s performance but believed there was still room for improvement.
“I am proud that Ella du Plessis High School is one of the best teams in school hockey. Even though we won, I believe we need more training to perfect our skills,” he said.
“Before every game, we humble ourselves because you can never underestimate your opponents.”
The hockey team is now looking for a sponsor to help provide new equipment and a suitable field for training.
While the netball team was disappointed with its results, the players remain determined to improve and return stronger at future tournaments.
Overall, the school’s sports department praised the learners for their hard work, dedication and commitment throughout the tournament.
