Debate is widely regarded by participants as an engaging and constructive way to express differing viewpoints on a given motion. This was echoed by a learner from Epako Secondary School, who described the activity as enjoyable and stimulating.

Epako Secondary School was among the institutions that took part in a debating tournament held in Aminus, where learners gained valuable experience. Although they did not secure the top prize, participants said they appreciated the opportunity to compete against other schools.

Candy Goreses described the tournament as exciting. “I really enjoyed taking part in this competition. Although we did not win, I learned a lot,” she said. She added that she gained valuable experience, improved her debating skills, and learned how to perform under pressure, highlighting the developmental value of such events.

The competition consisted of six rounds, with each speaker allocated eight minutes. Epako Secondary School won their opening round and progressed through the tournament. Debaters described the competition as tough, with Mokganedi Tiabanolo High School emerging as one of their strongest opponents. The team eventually reached the semi-finals, where they faced their most challenging opponents.

In an effort to strengthen their performance, the team adjusted their line-up, with experienced debaters Lee Gawaseb, Mario Katjinani and Davin Frey Syavani taking on leading roles.

Despite a strong showing, Epako Secondary School was defeated by Wennie du Plessis Secondary School in the semi-finals. However, the result did not dampen the team’s morale, with members remaining motivated and positive.

On the final day, winners were announced. Although the team initially believed their campaign had ended, Epako Secondary School was awarded third place overall.

Mokganedi Tiabanolo High School secured first place, while second place went to Wennie du Plessis Secondary School. The Best Speaker award was presented to Candy Goreses of Epako Secondary School, a moment of pride for her team and coaches.

The tournament concluded on a positive note, inspiring the Epako debaters to continue developing their skills and to aim higher in future competitions.
