IGCSE Year 1 learners at the International School of Walvis Bay recently stepped outside the classroom to experience different working environments through the school’s job shadowing programme.

The programme gave learners an opportunity to explore the world of work and gain a better understanding of careers and professions they may be interested in pursuing. By spending time in real workplaces, learners were able to observe professionals in their everyday working environments and see first-hand what different professions involve.

Job shadowing can help young people think about their future. While classroom learning provides learners with important knowledge and skills, experiencing a workplace can help them understand how these skills are applied in practical situations. It can also introduce them to careers they may not have previously considered.

During the programme, learners observed different professionals, learned about their responsibilities and gained insight into what it takes to work in various industries. They were also able to ask questions and engage with professionals about their experiences, qualifications and career paths.

For the learners, the experience provided an opportunity to connect what they learn at school with the world beyond the classroom. Seeing professionals at work helped learners better understand the importance of skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, organisation and responsibility.

The programme also encouraged learners to think more carefully about their own interests, strengths and possible career choices. Although they are still at an early stage of their academic journey, experiences such as job shadowing can help them consider the subjects, qualifications and skills they may need to achieve their future goals.

The International School of Walvis Bay extended its appreciation to the businesses, organisations and professionals who welcomed the learners and took the time to share their knowledge, experiences and workplaces with them.

A special thank you also goes to the teachers and staff who helped organise and facilitate the job shadowing programme, ensuring that learners could make the most of the experience.
