As the academic year winds down, university life can become a blur of late-night study sessions, exam deadlines and long hours in the library. But for students living in University of Namibia (UNAM) accommodation, October brings a chance to take a break and celebrate together.

UNAM's annual Christmas in October event, organised by the Department of Student Affairs (DSA) and the Student Representative Council (SRC), brought together 1 050 students from 20 blocks across the old and new hostels this year.

Daniel Vatileni, UNAM’s accommodation representative, said the event was designed to help students unwind and strengthen relationships within the residence community. “Our goal is to uplift students and encourage social bonding within the residence community, while giving everyone an opportunity to step away from academics, relax, and create memories together before the year ends.”

Geolin Cherelle Coleman, who attended the event, said it was about creating a shared experience for students living in the hostels. “It’s really just about giving hostel students a memorable experience and a chance to celebrate together,” she said.

With food, drinks, live entertainment and performances by local artists, the event transformed the hostel environment into a lively celebration. Interactive acts and music kept the atmosphere festive, giving students a welcome break from academic pressures.

Christmas comes early

Each year, organisers introduce a new theme to keep the event fresh. This year’s theme, Christmas in the City, encouraged students to dress up, take photographs and get into the spirit of the occasion.

But the appeal goes beyond the decorations and entertainment. The event is free to attend, with food and drinks provided at no cost, allowing students to join in without worrying about their budgets. Coleman said this was one of the things that made the celebration special.

Christmas in October has become an opportunity for hostel residents to celebrate their community, build friendships and take a breather before the academic year ends.
