Juuso Shikongo SS crowned high school champs

From accounting and economics to teamwork and strategy, learners from all 14 regions put their skills to the test.

After three days of competition, teamwork and new experiences, Reverend Juuso Shikongo Secondary School from the Oshikoto Region has been crowned the national champion of the 2026 Bank of Namibia National High School Competition.

Held every two years, the competition brought together 14 schools representing all 14 regions, with learners tested on their knowledge, speed and strategy in areas including accounting and economics.

For the learners, reaching the national stage was an achievement in itself. But as the Grand Finale approached, the pressure mounted.

Paulus Nakale, one of the finalists from Reverend Juuso Shikongo SS, said the team had prepared by revising their schoolwork, practising questions and supporting one another.

“We are excited but, at the same time, there is definitely pressure because we know how important this competition is. We have been preparing by revising our accounting and economics work, practising questions and encouraging each other as a team. We are trying not to let the pressure get to us and instead focus on staying calm, listening carefully and giving our best,” Nakale said.

That pressure was evident in the Grand Finale, where Reverend Juuso Shikongo SS faced Windhoek High School in a closely contested battle. The two teams were separated by just one point, making for a tense finish.

Reverend Juuso Shikongo SS ultimately claimed first place, followed by Windhoek High School in second, Nuuyoma Secondary School in third and Saint Kizito College in fourth.

For team member Brave Iilonga, the victory was a proud moment after the team’s hard work and preparation. “Winning this competition means a lot to us because we put in so much effort and worked together as a team. We came here representing the Oshikoto Region, and knowing that we are now the national champions makes us incredibly proud. The competition was challenging, but we stayed focused, trusted each other and gave it our all,” Iilonga said.

The winning school received N$50 000, while Windhoek High School and Nuuyoma Secondary School received N$30 000 and N$10 000 respectively. Saint Kizito College received a preloaded Wi-Fi router.

Away from the competition, the event gave learners a chance to meet peers from across the country and experience something different from the classroom.

Activities including skating and shopping gave participants time to unwind, make new friends and create memories together.
