Leading through service
Being Head Girl may sound like an exciting title, but for Geroné Kanyinga, the role came with responsibilities that required commitment, patience and resilience. As Head Girl of Academia Secondary School, she learnt that leadership is not simply about holding a position, but about actively serving others.
“Nobody prepares you for what’s ahead or gives you a guide on how to make it work,” Geroné says.
Throughout her leadership journey, she had to represent the entire school while also supporting and working with her fellow team members. The responsibility was sometimes overwhelming, and she admits that there were moments when she did not get everything right. However, she chose to view her mistakes as opportunities to learn and improve.
Geroné also learnt that leadership should never be centred solely on one person. Taking her team members’ views into consideration helped create a more positive and supportive environment within the school.
One of her biggest highlights was helping to restore discipline at the school. For Geroné, discipline is an important foundation for success and a better future, making this achievement particularly meaningful.
The journey was not always easy, but it helped her become stronger, more understanding and more empathetic. It also deepened her belief that serving God means serving others, following the example of Jesus.
Looking ahead, Geroné hopes to guide future student leaders by sharing the lessons she has learnt and helping them avoid some of the mistakes she made.
“Leadership is a gift from God, and I want future leaders to use that gift to serve and lead effectively.”
