First-year students at NUST were pleasantly surprised when Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare paid an unannounced visit to the Windhoek campus on 29 January. The visit left a strong impression on students, as Ngurare delivered a candid and motivational address focused on discipline, purpose, and gratitude.

Ngurare reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering young people through education. He highlighted key interventions such as the subsidisation of tertiary education and the establishment of the National Youth Development Fund, noting that these initiatives are designed to create meaningful opportunities for Namibian youth to succeed academically and professionally.

He urged students to reflect on their backgrounds and motivations for attending university, reminding them that examinations test knowledge and discipline rather than social popularity or lifestyle choices. Ngurare encouraged students to “remain grounded and committed to their studies,” emphasising that success is the greatest reward they can offer their parents and families.

Ngurare also cautioned students against giving in to the temptations of campus life, stressing the importance of self-discipline, moral values, and long-term vision in achieving academic success.

Drawing on his own life experiences, Ngurare shared insights into his academic journey, including his first experience of studying abroad at an African American university. He described the cultural shock, social pressure, and constant distractions that characterised student life at the time.

Echoing the Prime Minister’s message, NUST Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Andrew Niikondo reminded students that free tertiary education is a privilege that should not be taken lightly. He advised first-year students to make informed decisions when choosing their academic programmes, remain focused, and commit to one field of study from the outset to ensure a smooth and successful academic journey.
