Teachers trade classrooms for competition

On 18 July, the Academia Secondary School sports field was filled with laughter, competition and camaraderie as teachers from several schools gathered for a well-deserved Teachers’ Fun Day. The event gave educators an opportunity to step away from lesson planning, marking and teaching and simply enjoy themselves.

Teachers from schools including Academia, Khomas Tura, Goreangab, Jan Jonker and Westmont High School took part in the event. Instead of carrying books and pens, teachers arrived in sports shoes and team jerseys, ready to compete in relay races, football, netball and tug of war.

The activities showcased competitive spirit, with participants cheering for their teams and giving their best on the field. However, the day was about more than winning. It created an opportunity for educators from different schools to meet, socialise and strengthen relationships outside the classroom.

One of the highlights was the sharing of food. Each school brought delicious platters, which were shared among the participants. Teachers enjoyed meals together while exchanging stories, laughing and networking. The friendly atmosphere made the event feel less like a competition and more like a celebration of the educators who work hard every day.

Academia had a particularly successful performance in netball, taking home the netball cup. Their success did not continue across every event, as they lost in the football final and fell short in the relay. Nevertheless, the results did not take away from the spirit of the day.

The Teachers’ Fun Day highlighted the importance of giving educators time to relax. Teaching is demanding, and teachers often spend their days focused on helping learners succeed. Having a day to unwind allowed them to recharge, connect and enjoy themselves away from their daily responsibilities.

From cheering and dancing to competing and sharing food, the event created memorable moments for everyone involved. It reminded participants that teachers are not only educators but also people who deserve time to relax and have fun.

Sometimes, even teachers need to put the books aside and enjoy a day on the field!
