The Namport Khomas regional debate took place in the capital last Friday and Saturday to identify the team that will represent the Khomas Region at the annual Namport Debate in September.

Albertina Nangombe from Eldorado Secondary School was named best female speaker, while Ravinias Silas from Windhoek High School was the best male speaker overall.

Johannes Johannes, a learner from Hage Geingob High School, described the regional debate as “an exciting experience”. He added that it is important to engage in issues affecting the youth within the maritime sector.

On Saturday, four circuits advanced to the semi-finals. Two of these circuits then competed in the final, debating the motion “This House believes that maritime economics will define the next generation of African prosperity”.

Chair of the final round, Abilio Sanders, said: “It was a thrilling and highly intellectual debate between two exceptional teams, who delivered outstanding speeches in pursuit of the overall win.”

A teacher at Eldorado Secondary School and assistant debate coach, Ricky Martin Howoseand, highlighted that the Namport Khomas regional competition provides a strong platform for learners to develop and refine their oratory and critical thinking skills. He added that such motions contribute significantly to constructive social discourse and can influence policy at institutional, local and national levels.

Team Khomas, he said, is ready to reclaim its position as the winner of this year’s national competition.

Besides Nangobme and Silas, other participants were Precious Kavezeri (Windhoek High School), Jaydine Nel (Eldorado Secondary School), Thomas Shafuda (Windhoek Gymnasium), Abigail Samuel (Concordia College), Vievine Alfred, Johanna Shikongo and Johannes Johannes from Hage Geingob High School, and Loide Ekandjo (Ella du Plessis High School).
