We support SA artists, but where is the same energy for our own?
There is nothing wrong with Namibians supporting South African artists. Music brings people together, and appreciating talent from across the border is part of enjoying entertainment.
However, one cannot help but notice the difference in enthusiasm when international artists perform in Namibia compared with the support shown to local performers.
When a South African artist announces a show, people are often quick to buy tickets, make plans and turn up. Yet, when Namibian artists organise performances, the same level of enthusiasm is not always reflected in attendance.
This raises an important question: do we give local talent the same support we give artists from beyond our borders?
Namibian artists deserve opportunities to grow, build audiences and earn a living from their craft. They need more than likes, comments and words of encouragement on social media. They need people to buy tickets, attend their shows, stream their music and share their work.
At the same time, artists and event organisers also have a responsibility to create exciting experiences that attract audiences. Building a thriving entertainment industry requires commitment from both sides.
Supporting South African artists should never mean neglecting our own. We can celebrate both.
Perhaps it is time to match our online support with our physical presence. After all, we cannot expect Namibia’s entertainment industry to grow if we are not willing to show up for the people building it.
