Welwitchia University and Durban University of Technology (DUT) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at expanding opportunities for students and academics through research, skills development and cross-border collaboration.

The agreement was signed on Friday at Welwitchia University’s City Campus headquarters in Windhoek, following preliminary engagements between the two institutions earlier in the week.

Welwitchia University Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Research Sifiso Nyathi and DUT Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Engagement Fulufhelo Nemavhola signed the agreement on behalf of their respective institutions.

The ceremony was also attended by Welwitchia University Registrar Ndamona Kauluma and Pro Vice-Chancellor for Finance and Administration Kennedy Kandume, among other university officials.

Opportunities for students and researchers

The partnership provides a framework for the universities to collaborate on research projects, share academic resources and support joint postgraduate supervision and academic development.

It also provides for joint seminars and conferences, as well as staff and student exchange programmes intended to give participants greater exposure to different academic environments and cultures.

For students, the partnership could create opportunities to work with peers and academics across borders while gaining experience in research and other areas of higher education.

Nyathi described the agreement as “a pledge to work together, to innovate together, and to achieve together”.

“Partnering with DUT strengthens our capacity to deliver on these commitments. Together, we will create opportunities for joint research, staff and student exchanges, and collaborative programmes that will enrich our academic environments and contribute to regional and global production,” he said.

Nemavhola welcomed the partnership, highlighting the value of stronger cooperation between higher education institutions in Southern Africa to advance “research, innovation, knowledge exchange and societal development”.

From agreement to action

The partnership comes as universities across the region seek to strengthen research capacity, share expertise and create more opportunities for collaboration.

By bringing together academic resources, research expertise and innovation initiatives, Welwitchia University and DUT hope to contribute to skills development and knowledge-sharing in the region.

Kauluma said the value of the agreement would ultimately depend on how the two institutions put it into practice. “The true value of today’s signing will ultimately be measured not by the document we have signed, but by what we collectively do with it,” she said.

The two institutions are expected to use the agreement as a framework for developing practical areas of cooperation in research, academic development and student and staff exchanges.
