The event brought together learners from several schools in the area and highlighted the commitment young athletes have to improving their performances.

For many competitors, the zonal meet represents an important step towards regional and national competitions, offering them the chance to test their abilities against athletes from other schools.

Katelin Steenkamp, one of the competitors, said taking part in the event was both exciting and meaningful. “I am excited and proud to compete at the zonal athletics meet. It is a great opportunity to represent my school and do my best,” she said.

She said that preparing for the competition required discipline and consistency. “I trained twice a day, four days a week, from Monday to Thursday, practising my events and staying focused,” she said. “My motivation comes from my love of sport, improving my performance and making my supporters and family proud.”

Her goal, she added, is to improve her personal best and eventually qualify for national competitions.

Another athlete, Elton Hummel, said competing at a zonal level was a special experience and an important opportunity to grow. “This year’s zonal competition felt different because I was more prepared,” he said. “It is an honour to compete at this level and meet other talented athletes who share the same passion for the sport.”

Fellow athlete Ludwin Matthias said the region has significant athletic potential. “There is a lot of talent in our region, and events like these give athletes the chance to show what they can do,” he said.

Clayton Steenkamp, a parent of one of the athletes, said the competition highlighted the dedication shown by many young competitors. “Events like these motivate learners to keep improving and give them the chance to compete against other talented athletes,” he said.

Serina Jaar, a teacher at Keetmanshoop Secondary School who helped organise the event, said the meet helps identify promising athletes who could progress further in the sport.
