ZONE UNAM SRC launches exam feeding programme
As the examination season approaches, the University of Namibia (UNAM) Student Representative Council (SRC) has launched an initiative aimed at supporting students during the examination period: the UNAM SRC Exam Feeding Programme.
The programme will provide free meals to students throughout the examination period, running from 10 June 2026 to 17 July 2026. Meals will be distributed daily at 07:00, 11:00 and 15:00 in front of the SRC block at the UNAM main campus in Windhoek.
According to Rosabel Mulunga, secretary of finance at the UNAM main campus SRC, the initiative was inspired by recognition that many students face food insecurity during exams.
“We wanted to find a practical way to support students beyond academics by addressing a basic but essential need: access to food. The programme has received positive feedback from students in previous years, and many have expressed appreciation for the initiative,” she said.
Students have welcomed the initiative.
Second-year chartered accounting student Amor Mburuu said examinations were often a stressful period in which basic needs were sometimes overlooked. “I think it’s a really thoughtful initiative because examinations are one of the most stressful periods of the semester. Many students are focused on studying for long hours, attending exams, and meeting deadlines, and sometimes basic things like eating properly end up being neglected.”
The programme is financed through the SRC’s internal budget, allocated by Congress, which includes representatives from all 12 campuses, including the SRC president. SRC members will also serve meals to students during the campaign.
At present, there are no confirmed sponsors or external partnerships, but the SRC said it was exploring opportunities for collaboration to expand the programme in future.
One of the main challenges during planning has been estimating how many students will make use of the service.
The SRC said the initiative reflects its commitment to student welfare and highlights the link between basic needs and academic performance during examination periods.
