Becoming a formidable force in the legal industry
'The greatest source of inspiration is the vision I have for my future'
Jacky Hamunyela says being a lawyer is an incredibly rewarding experience.
On 23 August 2024, Jacky Hamunyela’s professional aspirations became a reality when she was admitted as a legal practitioner of the High Court of Namibia and promoted as an associate legal practitioner at Sisa Namandje & Co Inc., where she previously served as a candidate legal practitioner.“It is a testament to my perseverance and skill. Additionally, my promotion to associate legal practitioner on the same day demonstrates recognition of my expertise, work ethic and contributions to the firm,” Hamunyela says.
Hamunyela graduated with her Bachelor of Law (LLB) Honours degree at the University of Namibia in 2023 and immediately registered with the Justice Training Centre (JTC) and completed the course within a year.
She explains that her professional focus is on labour law, estate administration and commercial law. However, she is determined not to confine herself to specific areas of law at the moment, viewing her career as defined by continuous learning.
For these reasons she currently practices within the litigation and commercial departments of the firm.
Rigorous profession
While her passion and drive have helped her thrive in the legal profession, she says she has also faced some challenges along the way.
One of the challenges she faced was navigating the rigorous demands of legal education and training, particularly balancing the academic requirements of her Bachelor of Laws Honours degree with the practical demands of the JTC.
Nonetheless, she approaches these hurdles with a focus on the reasons she chose to pursue a law career, which include her commitment to advocate for minority groups and promote inclusivity and diversity.
”I draw inspiration from my father, whose unwavering work ethic has profoundly shaped my own dedication and drive. I am where I am today due to a combination of relentless effort and the grace of God,” Hamunyela says.
In addition, she draws inspiration from the accomplishments of her seven brothers as well as the future she envisions for herself.
“Ultimately, the greatest source of inspiration is the vision I have for my future – an aspiration that drives me every day and reminds me of the fulfilling and prosperous life I strive to live,” she adds.
Her advice for aspiring lawyers: ”For anyone contemplating this career path, I wholeheartedly encourage you to pursue it – you will not regret your decision.”
She says being a lawyer is an incredibly rewarding experience that offers unparalleled exposure to diverse areas of law.
