Christa Beukes (56) is a kind, charismatic and dedicated professional who has been employed by the University of Namibia (Unam) for 35 years.

She spent the majority of her career in the finance department, supporting students with their inquiries. With her love of helping others, she decided to focus her efforts on assisting students in managing their finances and making the registration process as smooth as possible to alleviate stress.

Beukes first started her journey at Unam in 1989 when she assisted with finance work and, 35 years later, she is still enjoying what she did all those years ago and continues to flourish.

Outside of her professional life, Beukes enjoys a good read, noting that this helps her keep her mind active. She also enjoys exercising. “Fitness is important, especially to people my age. I also believe in working hard in maintaining good health as this helps me execute my job effectively."

She also prioritises family time. "I love spending time with my children, especially now that they're getting older and starting their own lives," she said.

Beukes occasionally aids with registration at the start of the year.

"Registration is the busiest time of the year and therefore I make myself available to help out at the registration desk."

She said she enjoys her job, especially when she has to interact with students and help them out. Her work environment makes her job even more pleasant, as her colleagues are very friendly and helpful, she said, adding that she considers them her work family.

“My job isn’t always easy because when it comes to working with finances, you need to concentrate and avoid little mistakes as they can create bigger issues," Beukes said.

Throughout the years, she has learnt patience and how to get along with various types of people as she encounters an array of people every day.

As someone with 35 years’ experience, her advice to anyone with a desire to work in her position is to be hardworking, friendly and respectful with clients and students, as well as honest and upright.
