UNAM announces new category degrees
The University of Namibia (UNAM) has announced a new range of postgraduate degrees in green hydrogen manufacturing, artificial intelligence, oil and gas engineering, and automation. Set to launch in 2026, these programmes will position the university at the forefront of Namibia’s shift towards a knowledge-driven and industrialised economy.Delivering the State of the University Address last week, Vice-Chancellor Kenneth Matengu said the development represents a major step towards aligning higher education with Namibia’s emerging economic priorities, particularly in energy, digital technology and industrial innovation.
UNAM’s move comes as Namibia strengthens its position as a global player in the green energy revolution, with large-scale hydrogen and oil projects already transforming the country’s economic landscape. Through these specialised qualifications, the university aims to produce home-grown experts who can lead, manage, and innovate within Namibia’s billion-dollar energy sector while advancing automation and artificial intelligence.
According to the presentation, these new qualifications form part of UNAM’s wider institutional strategy to enhance financial sustainability, diversify academic offerings, and ensure the university’s continued relevance on the African continent. The goal is to make Namibia not just a consumer of advanced technology but an active producer and innovator within the global knowledge economy.
A legacy of learning
Since its establishment in 1992, UNAM has produced more than 77 000 graduates across multiple disciplines. Building on this strong foundation, the university is now looking to the future through initiatives such as the UNAM Rise Culture Transformation Programme, an internal drive to improve efficiency, student experience, and academic excellence.
The event also highlighted UNAM’s growing readiness to meet the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and beyond. By integrating high-tech academic disciplines, the institution is laying a strong intellectual base for Namibia’s industrial and digital growth, preparing the next generation of professionals to lead in a rapidly changing global economy.
As UNAM takes this bold, forward-looking step, attention now turns to which other frontier fields such as biotechnology, data science, or space technology, the university might explore next as part of its mission to secure Namibia’s place in the future.
