Westside High (WHS) hosted a concert to celebrate their 40 year anniversary in style.
The Trip Around the World concert was held on the 29 June 2017 and was certainly a night to remember. Different class groups, dressed in traditional and dancing attire, showcased their unforgettable performances on this memorable evening. “Everything was provided by the teachers, such as Mrs. Lenich and Mrs. Van Wyk, and the learners, but we also received a little help from The Lamp Shop”, were the words of Mr. Innes, a HOD at the school.
The night started off with a lovely prayer by Mrs.Viviers, one the teachers at the school. The grade 1s were the first to perform and were based in Mauritius. They were dressed in beach-wear and performed a pleasant dance showing kids playing at the sea. They were helped by the Grade 1 teacher, Mrs.Bringman. Following them, were the grade 2s who showcased a wonderful Ireland dance with bagpipe music. They ended their act with a song they sang. The Grade 3’s, who were based in China, had a choreographed umbrella dance and an action-packed karate fight. This was made possible by Mrs. Kathindi, the grade 3 teacher who used to give karate lessons at school. France was presented by the grade 4s, who wore white garments with blue and red cloths and performed a famous French dance..
The grade 5’s put up a great performance when they danced to Spanish music while dressed in black, white and red. India was also staged by the grade 6s who performed an unforgettable Indian dance. They wore beautiful and colorful dresses. The seniors of the primary school, the grade 7s, were dressed in red, black and white to implement a wonderful Mexican dance. The high school freshmen, the grade 8s, celebrated the night with an Italian dance with bright red and white attire. The performance that really stood out, according to the teachers and parents, was that of the grade 9s. They were dressed in formal black and white and presented 'The Perfect African Wedding'. “It was certainly a great experience and I’m happy to have been a part of it,” said Dante Mburuu, a grade 9 student who also took part in the performances. The grade 10s performed the classic German-based story of 'Hansel and Gretel' as their grade was based in Germany. The grade 11’s performance was also based nearby oceans. They were based in Hawaii and they wore semi-beach attire with petal necklaces around their necks. And last, but certainly not least, were the grade 12s, who dressed in half black half white clothing to perform a thoughtful optical illusion. They were also joined on stage by Mrs.Louw, the current principal at the school. “The event was a complete success and we wish to have others just like it,” said the principal the morning after the concert. The money raised was used to further fund the 40 year celebration week.
