Celebrating 30 years of democracy

This year Namibia will be celebrating 30 years of Independence on 21 March 2020.

Reflecting back, Namibia had to battle colonial rule under the Germans as well as the South Africans.

A lot of sacrifices, in the form of lives, had to be made for Namibia to take back its power. In 1990 Namibia not only gained its independence but it gained the Supreme Law of the Country as well – the constitution. This is the law that entrenches out fundamental rights and freedoms, such as your right to life, to privacy, to dignity.

We all should feel proud to be a Namibian and admire our fortune that we have in our country. Our ancestors and forefathers had worked hard and suffered at the brutal hands of the brutal behaviour of Germans and South Africans. It took the sacrifices of lives of many freedom fighters and several decades of struggle from 1884 to 1989. Now after many years of Independence our country is on the right track of development. Today our country is a well-established democratic country all over.

We should take an oath today to be highly responsible and well-educated citizens of Namibia. We should sincerely perform our duty and work hard to reach our goals to successfully lead this democratic nation. Namibia is our motherland and we are its citizens. We should always be ready to save it from the bad people.

As Duneside High School we always celebrate our independence day by hosting a cultural program, showcasing the different cultures we have in Namibia. One of the learners I spoke to said that we are in Namibia, despite the different races and cultures we have. “It is always great to see everyone coming together on Independence Day to celebrate the diversity of our nation.”

The school will be hosting the Independence Celebration on the 20th of March. The plan is to host two short plays depicting the importance of independence day, a prayer for our country as well as short performances by some of our cultural groups at school. The class that will be hosting a short presentation is the grade 9’s which will be done under the watchful eye of Mr Junius and Mr Du Plessis. Happy Independence Day Namibia, let us celebrate it responsibly.
