The DHPS extra mural “YouThinkGreen” is a non-profit organization at school that promotes environmental and social sustainability through education. YouThinkGreen has more than 15 branches all over the world, it empowers youth to start sustainable local projects in their communities and lead the change towards sustainable development by coming up with local solutions for global challenges.
Their main objective is to give motivating, innovative and practical answers to global challenges, such as environmental pollution, social injustice and over-consumption of natural resources. The youth sets up their project goals and contents to provoke positive impacts on the environment and society. YouThinkGreen works internationally with young people in order to raise awareness globally and allows them to share their different approaches on how to deal with the different problems faced in different countries.
The club meets once a week and the achievements are great: E.g. they successfully introduced a recycling system in DHPS.
The group´s latest project were the “Tetra Bags” - a project in which they used empty milk carton boxes to make a shopping bag and cut down the use of plastic bags. The Tetra bag is eco-friendly and won’t be carelessly thrown away such as a usual plastic bag that pollutes Namibia´s streets and the world´s oceans.
The group has produced about 15 of these bags which will be sold to to raise funds for the good cause and further eco-projects. At the DHPS-Bazaar the YouThinkGreen enthusiasts officially launched this project and auctioned off one of the bags to spread awareness. Highest bidder was DHPS teacher Ms Carola von Blottnitz who auctioned it for 300 dollars.
For more information on the YouThinkGreen-group or if orders for the Tetra bags want to be made please don’t hesitate to contact the DHPS.
“We are responsible for our planet so let us make the right decisions”,says the YouThinkGreen team and this is what motivates them in coming up with more great ideas to save the environment and strengthens the society. Keep up the good work!
