Don't love animals, then don't get one

Chrismarie Siebert

There is an extremely large amount of people who have pets, but not everyone loves or cares for them. I think it is extremely cruel when someone gets a pet simply for the sake of having one, and not actually taking good care of it. An animal should be loved and taken care of by someone who truly loves them. Not every person in the world can look after a pet, for various reasons, like not being at home for most of the time or simply because they do not like animals.

Pets are a massive responsibility and need a trustworthy and attentive owner. Pets are not for everyone, because they are a huge responsibility and put a dent on your credit cards. They eat a lot and require comfortable beds and many toys to keep them entertained. Unfortunately, animals are an expensive responsibility, but they truly do bring joy to a person's home. I am a huge animal lover, but the career I am interested in requires me to be away from home for long periods of time, which is why I won't get myself a furry companion.

Animal abuse is a real thing and it is extremely heart-breaking. Why have a pet when you are just going to abuse it? An animal is a living, breathing organism just like us, and should be loved and respected. I have witnessed a few cases of animal cruelty and it is a truly disgusting act of violence. Throwing rocks, kicking and hitting your pet because it misbehaved is not an option. A pet is just like a child; it is a small and troublesome living organism and deserves to be loved and taken care of just like a human. If it misbehaves, simply give it a warning in a soft, gentle tone. Animals respond better to someone who talks softly. Never raise your voice or show any threat of violence to an animal, because they react violently out of instinct to any possible threat.

Animal abuse is not only about acts of physical violence. Refusing food and water, not giving it your love and attention is also included. Leaving your pet at home for long periods of time without asking someone to regularly check up on your pet is cruel and repulsive. I despise people who have pets but do not look after them. If you are leaving for a few days or weeks, ask someone to feed and look after them for the time being. Animals adore attention from their owners, but neglecting them is abuse. They will grow up in an environment with no sense of comfort or security. People that neglect and abuse their pets should be arrested and locked up in a dark cell for a long time. They do not deserve to live a happy life when they could not even provide that necessity for their pets.

There are many people that say certain dogs are violent and a safety hazard to children, but in my opinion, it is not the dog's fault but rather the owner's. Dogs are extremely social animals and are very friendly. If the owner raises its dog in an unsafe and cruel environment, do not expect it to be a friendly dog. Animals adapt to their environment and if it is an abusive one, the animal will be dangerous and aggressive.

If you see any form of animal abuse taking place, do something. Do not take videos like everyone does in this generation. Help the animal, call the police. Just do not sit back and watch the abuse being unleashed on the defenceless creature.
