DSSW bids farewell to a legend
Bertha Tobias and Zawady TjijomboWe have experienced the loss of a highly esteemed figure who contributed towards putting our school on the map. Mr Jürgen Koch who passed on late 2016 was a principal and father to the Delta Community.
Koch not only understood the importance of quality education, he also ensured the maintenance of a conducive learning environment for the Deltarians during his time as principal. Koch served our school from 1979 to 2013, first started as a teacher and then a hostel supervisor and finally as our headmaster.
He will always be remembered as the reasonably strict principal who always wanted to steer “his children” in the right direction, and as the life of every school event.
“Mr Koch always went to the extremes when it came to improving our school,” says Ms Tamsen, a teacher at DSSW. She says that it was Mr Koch’s idea to get stands, smart boards and semi purified water for our school and he turned his dream into a reality. “He was in love with his buses and his school,” says Ms Tamsen.
Because of who he was Ms K.Tamsen, Ms G.I. Junke and Mr L.C. Mushabati loved him and had so much to say about him. This proves that there was so much more about Mr Koch than what was portrayed. When asked how she would describe the late Mr Koch, Miss Junke, who is a teacher at DSSW, and who worked with Mr Koch a really long time, had sweet and simple words to say. “He was a very friendly and humorous leader who had a good understanding of learners and I could always feel comfortable when talking to him.”
Miss Juhnke added that Mr Koch had a great impact on her life. “He always told me not to take life so seriously.” Ms Juhnke says that her relationship with Mr Koch was evolutionary, she says she watched Mr Koch “mature’’, and that over the years she watched Mr Koch become the visionary leader that he ended up being.
Ms Juhnke was not the only teacher at DSSW who had a handful to say about the late Mr Koch, Ms Tamsen was one who also had so much to say about the late Mr Koch.
"He was a kind people’s person who had principles that he always stuck to’’. She continued and said that Mr Koch knew his colleagues very well and was a wonderful mentor to her. One to agree with her on that is Mr Mushabati, a teacher at DSSW, who worked with Mr Koch during his time at DSSW.
Mr Mushabati said that Mr Koch knew his staff on personal levels and because of that even when a teacher would do wrong, he would talk to the teacher privately out of respect for the teacher. He adds and says that Mr Koch was and will continue being a great example for those who wish to be leaders in the education industry.
We also know that Ms Angelika Jacobie, our headmistress, is walking in the footsteps of Mr Koch and is continuously leading our school to even greater heights.
Mr Koch will always be remembered as a legend who was taken away from us much too soon.
We appreciate everything he has done to help make Delta what it is today.
His passing has left a void in the hearts of many which can never be filled.
Delta Secondary School Windhoek wishes his family and friends well and bids farewell to a true legendary icon.
