Editor’s note

An editor – in all honesty, I have no fixed idea of what an editor is. Throughout my years of being in our schools media group I have seen many editors come and gone, they were great leaders that were hungry for news and wanted to make sure that stories – that the truth – were told. They inspired me to write my best and made me feel as though I was conveying a great story, they entrusted me to tell the truth about what was happening around our school. For a long time I thought I wasn’t good even for that position, but they showed me I had the ability to accomplish greatness, I just had to put pen to paper and start writing.

Now that I am in this position of editor I see the great struggles they went through to make sure that everything went swimmingly. It might seem all fun and games but it is truly a heck of a ride.

Let me strip it down for you: the role of an editor is to give assignments to the journalists make sure the message is conveyed properly. The editor is in charge of bringing information to the viewer and to make sure that the public understands what is happening in their environment.

I started my journey in 2017, when I was in grade 9 and I thought that I wasn’t going to do the whole “journalism” thing for a long time, but now I find that I enjoy myself, because I can now see the different aspects of our school, I see the growth that we have made through the years and the struggles we have faced, and I want to spread the word about De Duine that our school isn’t just your typical school. We have so much hidden talents and children with great potential to become amazing leaders, speakers, public figures and just over all to make a change in the world of today. De Duine isn’t just a school, it is a journey, a journey to find yourself, to understand who you are and what you are capable of becoming. De Duine showed me my potential and the greatness I can accomplish when I put my mind to it, they have shown me that I have what it takes to be an editor for this newspaper, that I can do what I put my mind to, that I am a leader.

So I urge you to step out of your comfort zone, to try and see the world in a different light, to become the best you, you can be. People may judge our school but it is what you make of it that determines the outcome, you are in charge of your own ship, you call the shots, and you ARE in control…
