Rukee Kaakunga is a fashion journalist and her responsibilities include coming up with written content and accompanying images for the daily entertainment pages.

“This content can be anything from features, profile pieces, photo pages or columns on any burning topic at a given time. Apart from that, I also contribute content for the newspaper’s online platforms. This includes live tweeting at events, taking photos for our Instagram page or conducting video interviews for our YouTube channel,” she said.

Kaakunga said she was inspired to become a fashion journalist as she always had a love for reading news and when she was a child she looked up to journalists like Christiane Amanpour.

She further added that she didn’t initially study journalism but at a time when she found herself unemployed and looking for a way out of it, she attended a free workshop on Community Journalism and that is where the journalism spark was re-ignited for her once again.

She enrolled at the Namibian University of Science and Technology (Nust) to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Media Technology. Kaakunga also constantly attends journalism workshops, read extensively and always seek the advice of more seasoned journalists in order to get a better understanding of her job.

The character traits one needs for this profession is to be a morally upright person first and foremost. You need to be an avid reader because people who read make better writers.
