Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee…

Swakopmund’s very first inter-school boxing event took place at the Dome. Various schools from Swakopund participated in this competitive event and we were fortunate to have three participants representing us. The boxing event was organized by the Namib High School LRC’s and took place on 26 June. It was aimed at showcasing young talent, raising funds for the school and of course providing much appreciated entertainment to the spectators. We as the Westside High School family felt very privileged to have Metumu Tjimune and Ivan Nakashona (both grade 12’s) as well as James- Dean Goagoseb (grade 11) to represent our school.

Metumu Tjimune describes her experience as “thrilling and exciting” and that it was beyond her expectations. She further adds that they got training for two weeks prior to the event and that this really prepared her for what she was up against. “My teachers, LRC’s, friends and family also played a big role in getting me mentally ready for the fight. We got a lot of support from our school and this helped build our confidence.”

Ivan Nakashona, an LRC member says that he surprised himself throughout the process. “When I decided to take part, I had an idea of what was expected of me but I realized throughout the training that I had a lot of flaws which I needed to work on if I was to make my school proud.” He didn’t quite do well during the first round and considered giving up but he did not, he kept pushing. The experience was tough but amazing, he would not mind taking part in such an event again. He learnt that no matter how many times you fall don’t forget to get back up. I asked Ivan whether boxing was something he would keep on doing and he replies with an adamant; “No, it was a wonderful experience but it is not something I would do here in Swakopmund.”

This was a fun campaign for the public so no prizes were given. It was all about having fun and going through the experience. Metumu beat her opponent by technical knockout, Ivan drew with his and James- Dean unfortunately lost.

James- Dean said that he applauds the organisers for organizing such a great event. “Shout out to my opponent, who I take nothing away from. That day he was the better fighter.” James added that he was exhausted on the day of the fight as he had just returned from America after competing in the Battle of Atlanta Karate Championships. Excuses put aside, his experience with the exhibition can be compared to Anthony Joshua’s loss to Andy Ruiz. He admits that he underestimated his opponent and had not prepared at all.
