Gilbert Hainuca is a former Westside High School student best known for his athletic achievements in school. He made a name for himself in Namibia when he became the National Junior Champion for under 17 to 19. Gilbert now resides in Jamaica where he is undergoing a sports development programme. Thanks to a sports scholarship he received from the government, he is training at the University of Technology, Jamaica.

Gilbert started running at a very young age. His father, Mr Hainuca, saw potential in his son and encouraged him to keep at it. His inspiration since childhood had been Frankie Fredericks, the Namibian athlete. Gilbert aspires to one day have the chance of competing against the world bests. “Sports has had an incredibly positive effect on my life, it has taken me places and taught me things.” says the athlete. “I''ve met different people and seen different ways of life.”

According to Gilbert, Jamaica offers better sports facilities in contrast to Namibia. He trains with renowned athletes and a variety of coaches. “Jamaica has more opportunities as we train and are more competitive.” says Gilbert. Although his sporting career is on the rise, he plans on taking up his studies as well. “You never know what happens, especially when it comes to sport, that''s why I''m making my studies a priority.”

When asked how he deals with losing, this is what he had to say;

“Losing doesn''t get to me in a negative way. I''ve learned to dust it off and take it as a reason to work even next time. Doesn''t matter what sport you do, have patience, always do your best. Your best might not always be enough. Most of all remember, that it''s a got given talent so embrace it and thank God.”
