Gimmies got the spirit
Joana RibeiroOn 31 January 2020, Windhoek Gymnasium Private School held its annual inter-house athletics competition at the United Sports Field in Olympia. The day was filled with fun and enjoyment as the three teams (Geckos, Gurries and Guineas) went head to head on the track and field. And after a long 7 years, the Guineas took home the inter-house cup.
The day started with a prayer and the whole school singing along to the school song. Afterwards, the matrics in each team performed the dances they had been practicing all month, as well as their team anthem. After each team had the opportunity to show the others what they are about, the first item was announced and learners were told to move to their respective places.
The day was filled with every learner competing in various items, including high jump, long jump, javelin, shot put, discuss, races with varying distances, hurdles and relays. When a learner was not busy with an item, they could show their team spirit by singing along with the matrics by the pavilion. Snacks and drinks were sold throughout the day and around lunch time, food was available underneath a tent for learners, teachers and guests to enjoy.
The Imago got the chance to interview Marcus Fourie, a grade 8 learner who participated in the high school inter-house for the first time this year. He competed in the high jump, 100m race and received gold for long jump. When asked about his experience being part of the high school inter-house for the first time, he said, “It was so much fun and very organized.” He also stated, “The opening ceremony was my favourite part because we got to see all the matrics dancing.”
They also had a chance to interview Delvin Losper, one of the captains for the Guinea team. He competed in long jump and received silver, 110MH and received gold and 400MH and received gold. He said, “It was an absolute thrill. I enjoyed being the captain and lifting the winning trophy along my teammates really meant the world to me.” He regrets not being a part of the dances for Big Brag and athletics day but loved the atmosphere throughout the day nonetheless. He also mentioned, “All the matrics really brought the spirit and I couldn’t have asked for a better team than the one I’ve been blessed with.”
After a long and competitive day, the awards and winners were announced. Mikyle van Wyk (Gecko) received the best cheerleader award, the Gurris received the theme cup, the Guineas received the best theme award and were also the team with the highest points, making them the winners for the 2020 inter-house athletics.
