KEETMANSHOOP- In recent times, health workers all across the nation have been at the forefront in combating Covid-19.

//Karas Region governor Aletha Frederick gave the keynote address on the training of healthcare workers in oxygen therapy case management for nurses in high care units at the University of Namibia (Unam) Southern Campus in Keetmanshoop this week.

Frederick said the training was specially designed for nurses who are involved in the management of oxygen therapy.

"The unprecedented and invisible enemy Covid-19 has heavily impacted the world including our beloved country, Namibia. Certainly, the //Karas Region was no exception. We have lost so many lives and productive citizens in Namibia due to the pandemic," she said at the opening ceremony.

She said as a responsible and responsive government, the government of Namibia, including the leadership of the //Karas Region, has put necessary efforts in place to assist with combating Covid-19.

"The government has put aggressive multi-sectoral response programmes to work and bought the vaccines. The government has continuously encouraged the nation to go for vaccination so that the painful situation we went through cannot return to us again."

She encouraged nurses and other healthcare workers to keep up the good work of the last few months.

"I need to acknowledge that sometimes your efforts pass unnoticed, unappreciated, and even criticised. But, for the sake of your professional pledge and the love for your work, you continue to do your job compassionately as responsible citizens," Frederick said.

The governor said she believed the workshop would sharpen the knowledge and skillset of the health practitioners and would fill them with confidence.

She said the healthcare workers had exceeded her expectations and risen to the demands of treating and looking after Covid-19 patients.

"Many of us are indebted to express our gratitude to you for your heroism. Let me pause and say, thank you so much to all the nurses for demonstrating your resoluteness in honour of your calling with the support of your professional skills.

“Your dedication and response to the call of your duties at the most trying times in the history of our health sector have been commendable – and are equally equivalent to soldiers in the frontline of a war zone," she said.
