Making the most of each opportunity
Eldorado Secondary School's grade 10s held their annual Entrepreneurship Day recently.
Octavia Tsibes It is very important for every grade 10 learner at Eldorado Secondary School to take part in the school's Entrepreneurship Day, because it is part of the curriculum.
“You can only participate if you had entrepreneurship as a subject from grade 8 to 10. After being judged by the teachers after participating in Entrepreneurship Day, their marks will contribute to their continuous assessment,” entrepreneurship teacher Estelle van Wyk said.
She said after the main event the learners are required to submit a report and the teacher allocates marks that also contribute to their continuous assessment.
“To do theory is one thing but as an entrepreneur you need to put into practice what you were taught in class and this is what these learners were doing,” Estelle van Wyk said.
She said further it is important for learners to experience the challenges and setbacks of registering a business or even saving for start-up capital.
“Entrepreneurship is very important in our country, because we do not have to wait for the government to provide us with jobs to improve our standard of living, we need to start businesses and employ our fellow qualified youth to uplift the economy of our country,” said Ronai Uises, a grade 10 learner at Eldorado Secondary School.
Entrepreneurship is one is the pillars to develop our country and make it a more desirable country to work in, she adds.
“This year we decided to do things very differently; the prefects were selling coupons to the rest of the school, who did not participate,” Van Wyk said.
Towards the end of the day the learners handed in their coupons and received their money.
Van Wyk said the day allowed the learners to attract buyers to their stalls and also forced them to be creative with their marketing.
