The high school hosted the five-a-side tournament this past weekend to help raise funds for the neighbouring school, so it can build a new sports field.

“The money will build a safe sports field, which will be used for different activities like netball, volleyball and basketball because the current facilities are not conducive,” said Mao Zedong school teacher Lindie Ortman.

The school also intends to ensure that these facilities will be open to the community of Otjomuise, who are poorly equipped in terms of recreational facilities.

“We don't have any sports facilities at the moment which are fenced and in good shape for the leaners to help improve their sporting skills. I am very thankful for the support and sponsorships and I hope to see more growth,” said Michelle McLean Primary School principal Nadia Mushabati-Lizazi.

The tournament was due to attract 40 schools from the Khomas Region and uses the World Cup format

of group stages and elimination rounds.

The winner was presented with medals and a trophy. Each school was represented by 15 players.

The Michelle Mclean Primary School also received a major boost with a sponsorship of N$50 000 from the Chinese embassy in Namibia. The Osona Village developers also contributed N$50 000 towards the fund.

The school has been without a proper and safe sports field since its inception, but that will all change now thanks to the people who went out of their way to be a part of this event.

Dignitaries included the special advisor the Khomas governor special advisor, Rosalia Mwashekele-Sibiya, Chinese ambassador Zhang Yiming, Windhoek mayor Muesee Kazapua, Khomas education director Gerard Vries and members of the school board.

“Sport is very important and it is crucial that every child has access to proper facilities,” said Yiming.
