Standard Bank Junior Hockey Initiative 2021
The inaugural Standard Bank Junior Hockey National Festival took place on 27 November at Windhoek High School. One hundred and twenty junior hockey players representing 24 primary schools from five towns and four regions took part in this high-level development tournament.
The senior women indoor hockey national team was also present at this event, assisting the junior players and coaches. An all-star team called the MVP Team of 11 boys and 11 girls was selected by the senior women’s national team as well as the best goalkeepers, best players and the overall winner the MVP (Most Valuable Player). Standard Bank handed over back-to-school vouchers to the top three girls and boys. A total of 36 matches were played on the day. Each team played five round-robin matches before the top four teams progressed to the semi-final (knockout) stage.
In the girls’ section Katutura met Rehoboth in the first semi-final and beat them 1-0. In the second semi-final Gobabis met Mariental and eliminated them by a solitary goal by Tjimarija Kahitu from Nossobville Primary School.
The boys’ semis were rather tight with both winners decided through shootouts as both semis ended in a stalemate. In the first semi, Gobabis and Mariental played to a one-all draw but Mariental won 1-0 on shootouts.
In the second semi-final, Okahandja and Khomasdal played to a nil-nil draw in normal time. Okahandja took their chances well in the shootouts and beat Khomasdal 2-1.
Gobabis beat Katutura 1-0 in the girls’ final to be crowned national u/9 champions. In the boys’ final, Okahandja trounced Mariental 2-0 and walked away with the championship trophy.
Eleven boys and 11 girls were selected to the MVP Team. Standard Bank also gave six back-to-school vouchers worth N$3 000 to the top three boys and girls.
