The grade 12 excursion to Windhoek was the brainchild of Mrs Salom, our life skills teacher. It was a suggestion that was brought on by Rosalia Petrus and Michelle Lukas to take the grade 12’S to attend the Windhoek career expo as well as to visit various universities such as NUST and UNAM. The grade 12’s departed to Windhoek on Thursday 23 May, 2019 as the career expo took place at the Windhoek country club on Friday, 24 May 2019. An estimated 3500 learners from different towns and schools attended this expo, which intended to help learners choose their field of study and lay the foundation for their future.

Our grade 12 learners stayed at Shalom Youth Centre. It offers a quint and rustic setting in the urban, hustle and bustle of Windhoek. The Grade 12’s where treated to a tour around Windhoek. They visited the Independence Museum, which allowed the learners to see the artefacts and pictures that shaped the Namibian nation and exposed them to the history of our country not printed in history books.

“History is important, because you need to know where you come from in order to know where you are headed.

So much of our country’s history that is not taught in schools is clearly visible’, says one of the grade 12 learners.

Another learner expressed her experience at the two different universities. “the experience wassightful and educational. We had a full length tour of the facilities and courses offered. At UNAM. Learners met different people, were able to see different institutions and received a lot of information about bursaries and scholarships. It offered them a great opportunity to make an informed decision about their future and possible career options. An excursion like this has many benefits and gives learners the exposure they need to broaden their horizons.”

Mrs Salom has expressed her intention to make the excursion an annual event. Funding and transport however are a challenge and she has already started planning for the following year.
