Westside demolished Math Challenge!

Westside High
-Metumu Tjimune
The study of mathematics, like the Nile, begins in minuteness but ends in magnificence. This was proven by the Westside High learners at the Mathematics challenge. Competing with state and private schools in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, Westside truly made us proud with learners in the winning groups and top rankings.
Natango Amadila (Grade 8), Tina Tuzembeho (Grade 10) and Ayesha Olivier (Grade 8) qualified for the final round. The learners wrote many tests up to the late afternoon of Wednesday 29 June 2016. These test included speed test of 40 questions that were to be completed in ten minutes, without calculators!
Natango won the 3rd place in the grade 8 individual tests. Tina also brought home 3rd place in the grade 10 individual trials. In the groups' categories, Natango's group took 3rd place and Ayesha's group won 1st place receiving gold medals and a calculator. Congratulations and well done girls!
Overall, the Swakopmund cluster defeated Walvis Bay. The competitions' challenges coached the learners in problem-solving and it encouraged learners to improve their mental calculation skills and not to be solely dependent on calculators. According to Mrs. Salom the event was well organised and she is proud of the learners that took part in it. She thinks the learners have great potential and desires to start coaching them early for 2017's annual Mathematics Challenge.
