With nearly three decades of experience in finance, Nedbank Namibia appointed Martha Murorua as their managing director in June of 2020.

Murorua took over the reins from previous Nedbank managing director Lionel Matthews, who now serves as an advisor for the ministry of finance. Matthews joined the ministry for a period of two years as of November last year.

Murorua takes great pride in the role she can play in growing the Namibian economy. With her intimate and reliable understanding of the financial and economic sector in Namibia, coupled with a decent comprehension of the challenges the Namibian economy may face, she hopes to effect positive change in her capacity as managing director at Nedbank.

“I am really excited to join an institution which has a proud heritage of almost 50 years in our country. With an able leadership team and a committed legion of Nedbank employees, I look forward to the opportunity to grow both the Nedbank Namibia brand and its business influence to even greater heights,” says Murorua. “Despite the unexpected Covid-19 challenges, I believe we have great prosperity in store and my aim will be to fully maximise our opportunities,” she says.

Murorua has a master’s degree in business administration and is not shy to use this to the benefit of Nedbank and the Namibian economy at large.

She previously served as executive officer for consumer banking at a large commercial bank in Namibia after a decade in various capacities at Old Mutual Namibia.

She laid the foundation for her undeniably prosperous career in the auditing field lending her talents to PricewaterhouseCoopers and TransNamib Limited.

Along with an MBA, obtained from Stellenbosch University in South Africa in 2009, she also boasts a bachelor of accounting obtained in 2000 from the University of Namibia and a National Diploma in Commerce from the Polytechnic of Namibia, now the Namibia University of Science and Technology, in 1995.

In May of 2021, Murorua took up leadership at the Bankers Association of Namibia as the chairperson alongside Baronice Hans as vice-chairperson.

There, Murorua replaced Ester Kali who was ecstatic to hand over the reins of the Bankers Association of Namibia to her.

“It is important for the spirit of teamwork to continue amongst ourselves, because as much as healthy competition is necessary, we must also support each other to collectively build our industry and to help Namibia to thrive,” Murorua said at her induction into the Bankers Association of Namibia.

She hopes that, in spite of tough times, the Namibian nation will stand together.

“These are difficult and unpredictable times, yet we have seen financial institutions lean in to assist their clients and consumers in navigating the current economic climate. The zeal and determination with which they serve their customers and communities are inspiring,” she says.
