The Archery Association of Namibia (AAN) recently held its nationals to select archers for the African Regional Field Archery Championships (ARFAC), taking place in Lusaka, Zambia, from 3 to 6 July this year.

Held at AAN’s new range, Windhoek’s Yellowstone Trails, the field archery championships saw the country’s finest archers put their marksmanship to the test, aiming to make the cut for the continental showpiece.

They battled it out in the International Field Archery Association (IFAA) field, animal and hunter rounds over two days, shooting at 28 different targets with distances ranging from 20 feet to 80 yards.

In the veteran male bowhunter recurve division, uncontested archer Lutz Wahlers secured the gold medal.

The adult female freestyle unlimited division saw Jacqueline Coetzee clinch gold, alongside Bea Viviers, who settled for silver.

The adult male freestyle unlimited division saw Jannie Meuwesen secure gold, ahead of silver medallist Louan Groenewald and bronze medallist AJ Groenewald.

In the young adult male freestyle division, Adriaan Walters dominated to secure gold, ahead of silver medallist Evan Meyer.

Meanwhile, in the adult male bowhunter unlimited division, Henk van Blerk took gold, followed by Marinus Kruger with silver and Stephan Meyer with bronze.

Uncontested cub male bowhunter Rainer Kruger clinched gold in the bowhunter unlimited division.

In a statement recently issued by the association, AAN president Jannie Meuwesen said the competition had favourable weather conditions, but the shooting course presented challenging angles to manage.

“The archers who will be representing the country at Zambia’s ARFAC tournament are me, Stephan Meyer, Evan Meyer, Eden Keyser and Bea Viviers,” he said.

Speaking to this publication, Jacqueline Coetzee said it was the first time the association competed at Yellowstone.

“We recently moved everything from the range where we were, just across from Heja Lodge, but now this is our ground. This is where we're gonna be for the next, hopefully, many years to come,” she said.

Sole cub archer Rainer Kruger said he hopes more cubs will join him for a fun competition.
