Boys teams keep WHS flag flying high

The hockey boys were the only first-team sports match in which Windhoek High School achieved a win against Windhoek Gymnasium in their annual inter-high last weekend.

The WHS hockey boys first team only lost two inter-high encounters against Gymnasium since 2016 and on Friday night, the depth in WHS boys hockey was once again on display when they won with all the third, second and first teams.

The WHS boys coach Johann Weyhe says he has been impressed with the Gymnasium boys first team, coached by Siyabonga Martins.

“The Gymnasium defender Jorn Erdmannsky and goalkeeper Paulo Jansen did some really good work which prevented the final result from being higher.

“Namibia can get some good players from this year’s boys squads again if we can keep them motivated and competitive.”

The WHS boys first team won 3-0 thanks to goals by Alex du Plessis, Josh Hatton-Jones and Hafeni Mufeti.

Windhoek Gymnasium’s girls first team, coached by Kagiso Mosiane, took the honours by beating WHS 2-0, striking with goals by Christine van Rooyen and Onique Bezuidenhout.



COLLATED INTER-HIGH HOCKEY RESULTS

Girls 4th teams: Gymnasium won 13-0.

Girls 3rd teams: WHS won 5-0.

Boys 3rd teams: WHS won 4-0.

Girls 2nd teams: Gymnasium won 2-1.

Boys 2nd teams: WHS won 6-1.

Old Scholars men: WHS won 8-5

Girls 1st teams: Gymnasium 2-0.

Boys 1st teams: WHS won 3-0.



THIS WEEKEND

The prestigious annual invitational event between the top eight invited boys and girls first teams – respectively known as the Doc Jubber and Kom-en-Haal tournaments – will be contested at the Windhoek High School astro court this weekend.

The eight schools involved in both tournaments are Windhoek Affies (defending boys champions), St. Paul’s College (defending girls champions), Pro-Ed Academy, St. George’s College, Private School Swakopmund, Walvis Bay Private School, Windhoek Gymnasium and WHS.

According to Weyhe, St. Paul’s will be the team to beat in the girls’ Kom-en-Haal challenge, with Windhoek Affies and Gymnasium also strong contenders.

He reckons every match in the boys’ Doc Jubber tournament could be influential and no team can be taken lightly, but that the top five title challengers could be Windhoek Affies, St. Paul’s, St. George’s, PS Swakopmund and WHS.

In the shortened format, every match’s playing time is 20 minutes one way, with no halftime turn-around.

The program at WHS court starts Friday (07:30 until 21:00) and continues Saturday (07:30 until the girls final at 17:20 and the boys final at 17:45).
