The 12th edition of the Erongo Powersave Street Mile 1.6 km Challenge Run took place this past Saturday in Omaruru, attracting 1 312 athletes from across Namibia for a vibrant day of competition and community spirit.

Participants competed across ten categories, including the newly introduced wheelchair race, which became one of the most memorable and uplifting highlights of the event. The challenge, which has steadily grown since its inception, aims to promote road running, support grassroots sports development, identify emerging talent, and encourage mass participation.

The race organser Berthold Karumendu expressed delight with both the turnout and the growing national interest in the event. “The Powersave Street Mile Challenge has developed into one of Namibia’s key athletics fixtures, providing a platform for both professional and amateur runners to showcase their talent,” he said.

Karumendu noted that the inclusion of the wheelchair category this year underscores the event’s commitment to inclusivity and equal participation in sports. “It’s inspiring to see athletes with disabilities compete alongside able-bodied runners, demonstrating determination, skill and true sportsmanship,” he added.
