Windhoek Golf Club proudly hosted the annual Gold Cup last weekend, generously sponsored by The Corner Butcher. The Gold Cup is a sanctioned event of NAGU (Namibia Amateur Golf Union), with players competing for both national merit points and valuable World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points, reinforcing its status as one of Namibia’s premier amateur tournaments.
A special highlight was the commanding performance by Likius Nande, who produced an outstanding display of championship golf to secure the overall gross title with a total score of 210, finishing comfortably ahead of the chasing field.
His decisive victory reflected both consistency and class, affirming his status as a worthy Gold Cup champion and extending his run of consecutive wins in NAGU tournaments to seven in a row.
A strong and competitive field of 58 players, including women, took part in the championship. Participants travelled from as far as Grootfontein, Omeya, Mariental and Windhoek, reflecting the widespread appeal and prestige of this event.
The A and B division players contested 54 holes over two days (36 and 18), while the C division played 36 holes, at 18 per day.
Players who opted out of the medal format were accommodated in the stableford competition, with the women also contesting the stableford format.
Club captain Toady Gurirab, who is also the NAGU president, said: “The club extends its sincere and heartfelt appreciation to our sponsor for stepping in at the eleventh hour and rescuing this prestigious event. Their timely and generous support not only ensured the Gold Cup went ahead successfully, but indeed elevated its stature and overall quality.
“Players expressed genuine appreciation and delight at the level of sponsorship and prize offering, with many commenting on the professionalism and value added by The Corner Butcher’s involvement. This act of commitment reinforced the importance of strong partnerships in maintaining the excellence and continuity of our flagship events.”
Gurirab congratulated the WGC management and golf committees for the excellent organisation and seamless execution of the tournament.
