Krugel, Kruger take senior crowns in Stampriet

Roots Gymnasium archers Jorine Krugel and Duan Kruger claimed the senior girls’ and boys’ crowns, respectively, at the recent African Genesis Archery (AGA) Namibia Elnatan Ranking Shoot held in Stampriet.

A total of 70 archers competed for honours, with cubs taking part in the Bullseye round. Junior and senior archers competed across the Bullseye and Animal Target rounds for a combined maximum score of 1 200.

Archers outside the school system competed in the Adult Archery Group (AAG), where the two rounds carried a combined maximum of 900.

Krugel posted an overall score of 1 124 to take senior girls’ gold ahead of Windhoek Afrikaans School (Wap) archer Jani de Beer, who finished second on 1 040. Krugel also improved her score in the Animal Target round from 280 to 284.

De Beer’s schoolmate Janica Mostert completed the podium with 1 013.

In the senior boys’ division, Kruger prevailed by just two points after scoring 1 135, with Wap’s Willem van der Merwe taking silver on 1 133. Danie Joubert Combined School’s Jason Koch completed the podium with 1 104.


Junior and cub honours

The junior boys’ competition went down to the number of tens shot after Excelsior’s Adriaan Louw and Elnatan’s Henco Saayman both finished on 1 028.

Louw took gold after shooting 30 tens to Saayman’s 28, while Excelsior’s Juan Marais finished just one point behind them in third on 1 027.

In the junior girls’ division, Wap’s Jeandrie van der Merwe won with 1 046, followed by schoolmate Martmarie van der Merwe on 1 014 and Danie Joubert’s D’Neal Scott on 930.

Wap’s Elani Pearson was the sole competitor in the cub girls’ division and took gold. Roots’ Johan de Jager finished first in the cub boys’ division ahead of Wap’s Xander Pearson, with the pair the only competitors in the category.


Adult honours

Corlia Krugel topped the AAG women’s division with 815, ahead of fellow Roots archer Madelyn Krugel on 701. They were the only two competitors in the category.

Wap’s Paul van der Merwe led the men’s standings with 845, followed by Roots’ Willie Krugel on 829.

Johan de Beer of Wap finished third on 785, while schoolmate Eugene Pearson placed fourth with 759.


Excelsior makes debut

Elnatan school representative Yolandé Gouws said the ranking shoot also welcomed Excelsior School to the competition for the first time.

“They took part in their first-ever competition and had two archers in the medal positions [in Adriaan Louw, winning gold in junior boys and Juan Marais winning bronze in the same category],” she said.

Gouws said windy conditions tested the archers throughout the competition, but noted that the shoot went well.

“Elnatan Private School would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to every school, archer, parent, coach and supporter who made the effort to join us. Your presence and support mean so much to us,” she said.

She also thanked debutants Excelsior for their participation, describing the event as a day filled with competition, sportsmanship, laughter and plenty of arrows flying.

“It was a privilege to host you all. We look forward to seeing everyone again at the next shoot [which will be the nationals in Windhoek on 12 September],” she said.
