NGF team of six takes on international tourney
Rhythmic gymnastics
Namibia's rhythmic gymnasts will step into the international spotlight today.
Six of the country’s finest gymnasts from the Namibian Gymnastics Federation’s (NGF) rhythmic section will today and tomorrow take on some of the best in the world at the Angolan Gymnastics Federation’s (FAG) international tournament, held at Luanda’s Helmarc Arena. The Namibian team comprises Aleandra van Rooi from Infinity Rhythmic Gymnastics and Karin Hamunyela, Emilia Ekandjo, Peya Kashaka, Kenandjo Mupia and Taimi Nanyanga from Windhoek Rhythmic Club.
Accompanied by FIG-certified judge Adonis-Byl as head of delegation, along with coach Wietsa Snyman, they are set to go up against gymnasts from the host country, Brazil, Portugal, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Adonis-Byl told Sport Wrap that the team’s participation is aimed at getting gymnasts out onto the competition floor to gain as much exposure as possible.
“This is good exposure and a great opportunity to compete amongst our peers in Africa [and the world]. We want to be able to measure ourselves against the African giants of rhythmic gymnastics like Egypt and South Africa,” she said.
