NTTA crowns final champions at Windhoek Open
The Namibia Table Tennis Association (NTTA) brought its competition season to a close at the Windhoek Open, which attracted 27 players to Wanderers Table Tennis Hall last weekend.
The players ranged in age from over ten to 80 years, with youngsters testing themselves against more experienced opponents across the singles, doubles and mixed doubles events.
Fifteen-year-old Kamrouz Ghayouri emerged as the standout performer with three gold medals across the men’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles events.
Ghayouri claimed the singles title before adding gold in the men’s doubles alongside Silas Anguku and mixed doubles with Lian Gebauer.
Gebauer also enjoyed a successful tournament, collecting two gold medals after winning the women’s singles title to go with her mixed doubles victory.
Singles honours
Ghayouri claimed men’s singles gold ahead of silver medallist Caden Bosman, while Anguku and Sakaria Imbondi secured the two bronze medals.
In the women’s section, Gebauer secured gold, followed by Karolina Shigwedha with silver and Cadence Farmer with bronze.
Speaking to Sport Wrap yesterday, tournament director Hellen Kadandara said the competition brought together players of different ages and experience levels.
"We had five women, including one veteran, and 22 men, including seven veterans, competing at the event," she said.
Doubles honours
Ghayouri and Anguku emerged victorious in the men’s doubles, while Fabian Tait and Charles Cui finished with silver.
The bronze medals went to the pairs of Imbondi and Fillemon Ikanda, and Bosman and Dietrich Mowes.
In the women’s doubles, Christa Mzorek and Shigwedha claimed gold, while Farmer and Gebauer settled for silver.
In the mixed doubles, Ghayouri and Gebauer claimed gold ahead of silver medallists Bosman and Farmer. Anguku and Shigwedha completed the podium with bronze.
Season finale
Kadandara described the tournament as an entertaining conclusion to the competition calendar.
“It was quite an exciting way to end the season. I think the competitors enjoyed it, especially because we had doubles and mixed doubles in addition to the singles,” she said.
In a statement shared on its Facebook page, the NTTA lauded the performances across the tournament, saying they reflected the progress made by the country’s table tennis players during the year.
The association also thanked Kadandara, who serves as its competitions manager, for her work in organising tournaments throughout the season.
