Shalulile becomes PSL's all-time leading goal scorer.
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has led tributes to Namibia’s football star Peter Shalulile, who etched his name into South African football history by becoming the all-time leading goal scorer in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).The Mamelodi Sundowns forward netted his 130th career goal in a 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC, surpassing Siyabonga Nomvethe’s long-standing record.
“Namibia celebrates with you on becoming the Premier Soccer League’s all-time top goal scorer with 130 goals. This remarkable milestone is a shining example of what hard work, discipline, and determination can achieve,” the president said in a message posted on X.
She added: “Your success reminds us of the power of sports to inspire, unite, and create opportunities, as envisioned in NDP6. You have carried the Namibian flag with pride and set the bar high for the next generation of athletes. Well done, Peter. You have made the entire nation proud!”
South Africa’s sports minister Gayton McKenzie also paid tribute, writing on X: “Congratulations Peter, Namibia stand up.”
The record-breaking moment
The decisive goal came just before half-time when Shalulile won and converted a penalty. It capped a lively first-half display in which he hit the crossbar with a header and repeatedly tested Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens.
Although Stellenbosch created chances of their own, Sundowns’ defensive discipline kept them at bay as the champions extended their unbeaten run this season.
A Sundowns legend
Despite recent speculation about a possible transfer, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso reaffirmed the Namibian striker’s importance.
“Peter is a very important player for the club, for the coach, and for everybody,” he said, explaining that Shalulile’s reduced minutes in recent matches were due to rotation rather than performance.
At 31, Shalulile’s consistency and work ethic have cemented his status not only as a Sundowns legend but also as one of the most decorated strikers in African football. His record-breaking feat adds another chapter to a career that has inspired young players across Southern Africa.
