Reyneke helps secure Zwartkopanapolis 500 victory

Namibian teenager plays key role in dramatic endurance race triumph

Namibian racing driver Kobus Reyneke played a key role in a dramatic overall victory at the Zwartkopanapolis 500 endurance race at Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria on Saturday.

Reyneke shared a highly modified 1977 Datsun 1200 with teammates Wayne Potgieter, Mo Mia and Christopher Tait, with the team claiming overall victory and the Most Dedicated Team award.

The race proved to be a major test of endurance and determination for the team.

After a strong opening stint by Potgieter and Mia, which left the team second in Class A after Stage 1, Reyneke took over the car on lap 155.

The team already had two breakouts, leaving little room for error. Reyneke also immediately encountered problems with second gear, forcing him and Tait to complete their stints using only third and fourth gears.

Despite losing around 1.5 seconds on every lap through the hairpin, Reyneke maintained impressive consistency, recording lap times between 1:18.3 and 1:18.5.

Conditions then became increasingly difficult inside the car, with Reyneke reporting burning eyes, dizziness and disorientation as petrol fumes filled the cockpit.

On lap 202, the car suddenly stopped on track and had to be towed back to the pits. The team discovered that the fuel tank was leaking badly and the car had run dry.

The team replaced the damaged tank, losing around 30 minutes in the process, before Tait returned to the circuit and produced a strong recovery stint, maintaining laps between 1:18.3 and 1:18.6 despite still having no second gear.

With 56 laps remaining, Reyneke returned to the car on lap 280 for the final stint.

He immediately raised the pace, producing a series of 1:18.1 and 1:18.2 laps, with several laps dipping into the 1:18.0s.

Together, Reyneke and Tait clawed back an impressive 10 laps, with their pace among the strongest on the circuit.

Their recovery ultimately helped secure the overall victory, while the team was also rewarded with the Most Dedicated Team award.

The team credited Travis and Frans Jensen, together with the entire Jensen Motorsport team, for their outstanding work in the pits, team control and communications throughout the race.

For Reyneke, the victory adds another impressive achievement to an already successful 2026 season, during which he has also been challenging at the front of the Toyota Gazoo Racing GR86 Cup.

The Zwartkopanapolis 500 once again demonstrated the importance of reliability, strategy and determination in endurance racing, with Reyneke’s performance highlighting the composure and speed that continue to make him one of Namibia’s promising young racing drivers.
