Namibian powerlifter Phillipus Shangadi will represent the country at the World Powerlifting Championship taking place in Brazil from 22 to 26 October. The event will feature some of the strongest athletes from across the globe and stands as a proud moment for Namibia’s emerging powerlifting community. In recent months, Shangadi has shown remarkable perseverance, balancing intense training with efforts to raise funds for the trip. His dream is now becoming reality thanks to JSB Sports Betting, which stepped in to sponsor his travel and competition gear.
Deputy sports minister Dino Ballotti praised the partnership and the athlete’s commitment. “We had a bit of a challenge raising the funds, but our friends from JSB were very quick to come on board,” said Ballotti.
“They’ve always been strong supporters of sport, from football to now powerlifting. We truly appreciate that commitment.”
Manager of JSB Sports Betting Jevon Wilson said supporting Shangadi aligns with their vision of uplifting all sporting disciplines in the country. “When Dino called, it was a no-brainer,” said Wilson.
“Powerlifting might not be as well-known to the public, but this is a chance to put the sport, and our champion, on the map. It’s also part of fitness, which we’re passionate about. Phillipus is humble and determined, and we believe he’ll make us proud in Brazil.”
In response, Shangadi expressed heartfelt appreciation for the support.
“JSB went out of their way to make this possible for me,” he said. “I’m going to promote their brand wherever I go and represent them professionally. More than 10 000 athletes will be at the event, and I’ll make sure JSB is recognised on the international stage.”
Shangadi’s participation at the World Powerlifting Championship marks another step forward for Namibian powerlifting, a sport steadily gaining recognition thanks to dedicated athletes and supportive partners.
