Weakley, Krugel crowned national champions

Burton Weakley of Windhoek High School (WHS) and Jorine Krugel of Roots Gymnasium are this year’s new African Genesis Archery (AGA) Namibia national champions in the boys’ and girls’ sections, respectively.They were crowned the top-performing archers at the 10th nationals recently held at Olympia’s Trustco United Sports Field in Windhoek, which attracted over 140 archers to battle it out for national glory.
Weakley and Krugel were handed the titles by last year’s winners, Teresa Kasomba of Community Hope School (CHS) and Tristan Jacobs of Berg-Op Academy.
At the nationals, archers put their marksmanship to the test across the senior and junior age categories in the Bullseye and Animal Target rounds, with a combined maximum score of 1 200.
Senior champions
Weakley took the senior boys’ title after storming to victory with a combined score of 1 161, 22 points ahead of second-placed Michael Basson of CHS (1 139). Close at Basson’s heels was Duan Kruger of Roots Gymnasium with 1 136 in third place.
Meanwhile, Krugel led the senior girls’ standings on 1 120, seven points clear of second-placed Zelandra du Plessis of Pro-Ed Academy (1 113). Teresa Kasomba (CHS) secured third place with 1 105.
Junior champions
The junior section’s outstanding archers were as follows:
Boys: 1 Willem van der Merwe (Windhoek Afrikaans Private School - WAP - 1 152), 2 Luka Janse van Vuuren (Moria Private School - 1 144), 3 Björn Bergmann (Central Elite Archery Club - CEAC - 1 123).
Girls: 1 Charisme Rothen (Pro-Ed - 1 085), 2 Donaline Pieterson (CHS - 1 061), 3 Zeanette Jacobs (WHS - 1 056).
Top five teams
The season’s top five teams across the senior and junior sections were as follows:
Senior: 1 CHS, 2 WHS A, 3 WAP, 4 Pro-Ed, 5 Moria.
Junior: 1 Moria, 2 WAP A, 3 CHS, 4 WAP B, 5 CEAC.
Top 10 schools
The season’s top AGA schools across the senior and junior sections were:
Senior: 1 WHS, 2 CHS, 3 WAP, 4 Roots, 5 Pro-Ed, 6 Windhoek Christian Academy (WCA), 7 Moria, 8 Danie Joubert Combined School, 9 CEAC, 10 Windhoek Gymnasium.
Junior: 1 WAP, 2 Moria, 3 CHS, 4 CEAC, 5 Berg-Op, 6 Pro-Ed, 7 St Paul’s College, 8 WHS, 9 WCA, 10 Danie Joubert.
Most improved archers
The most improved archers were WCA’s Ayanda Marima in the girls’ section and Ian Brittz in the boys’.
AAG champions
Parents and those outside the school system also joined in on the fun, competing in the Adult Archery Group (AAG) category in the Bullseye and 3D Rounds, which carry a maximum score of 900.
Men’s winners: 1 Berend Blom (849), 2 Toni Tripodi (833), 3 Johan Raes (826).
Women’s winners: 1 Marionette de Waal (853), 2 Dominique Bekker (842), 3 Alyssa van Zijl (822).
Golden archers
Archers who accumulate the most gold medals throughout the season are awarded the Golden Boy and Golden Girl titles.
This year’s senior section saw last year’s title holders, Burton Weakley (23 gold medals) and Teresa Kasomba (17), retain their golden awards. In the junior section, the titles were awarded to Amelia von Wielligh (Berg-Op) for the girls and Willem van der Merwe for the boys.
Prestige award winner
AGA Namibia’s overall rankings leader was Burton Weakley, who has been a force to be reckoned with throughout the season and his archery career.
He was awarded the newly introduced Prestige Award for matric archers in their final year to recognise their outstanding achievements over the years.
AGA Namibia president Poenie Weakley confirmed that the final shoot of the year is the AGA Year-End Shoot, to be held at Windhoek International School on 1 November.
